Safe Connect FAQs

1.

Q.

What is a generator transfer switch system?

A.

A generator safe connection system is designed to prevent electricity from back feeding into AmerenUE’s power lines while the generator is powering your home. Backfeeding―when electric power flows in the opposite direction from its usual flow―can be extremely dangerous because it presents risks to neighbors served by the same utility line, and it presents an electrocution risk to utility workers. If a lineman is working to restore power to utility lines that are believed to be dead and the lines are actually energized due to a back-feed of electricity from an improperly connected generator, the lineman could be seriously injured or possibly killed.

2.

Q.

Which safe connection systems (transfer switches) for back-up generation are eligible?

A.

AmerenUE engineers have reviewed multiple suppliers of these systems and selected several. Selected generator safe connection systems are Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc. (UL)-tested and designed to connect a generator to your home’s wiring. The generator safe connection systems come in a range of sizes to handle the specific capacity of your electric generator. The AmerenUE approved partner you choose to assist you with your system will provide you with the products approved by AmerenUE.

3.

Q.

Who is eligible for the program?

A.

All Missouri AmerenUE residential electric customers are eligible for the rebate. AmerenUE natural gas customers are not eligible.

4.

Q.

What does the rebate cover?

A.

Rebates go only toward the purchase and installation of the safe connection system for the generator―not toward the purchase of an actual generator or any other equipment. In addition, AmerenUE has developed a network of providers who can install generator safe connection systems. To receive the rebate, a customer must use a network provider.

5.

Q.

How do I get the rebate?

A.

To get the rebate:

1.

The customer selects a contractor from AmerenUE’s provider network and has that contractor call AmerenUE for prior approval and request a form Document C0 prior to starting the installation of the generator transfer (safe connection) system. To get the rebate, an AmerenUE form Document C0 must accompany each application.

2.

The contractor then submits the rebate application to AmerenUE along with other required documentation.

3.

The check for the rebate is either sent to the customer at the address where the system was installed or applied as a credit to the customer’s bill―depending on the preference checked when the rebate application is submitted.

6.

Q.

I have already installed a safe connection system for my generator. Am I eligible for the program?

A.

If the generator safe connection system was installed between Nov. 2, 2007, and July 31, 2009, and was installed by an AmerenUE provider, you are eligible for the rebate.

7.

Q.

I installed a generator transfer switch system using an installation contractor that is not on AmerenUE’s provider network, can I get the rebate?

A.

No. In order to be eligible for the rebate, the generator safe connection system must be installed by a contractor who is part of the Provider Network, and the system must have been installed between Nov. 2, 2007, and July 31, 2009.

8.

Q.

What qualifies a contractor to be part of the Provider Network?

A.

AmerenUE reached out to hundreds of contractors to develop the provider network. Selected contractors must:

Certify that they hold all required licenses and certifications.

Have agreed to comply with all applicable federal, state and local statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances and other requirements pertaining to the sale and installation of Safe Connect systems.

Meet rigorous performance and experience requirements.

Have agreed to carry $2 million in general aggregate and $2 million Products-Comp/Op aggregate liability insurance coverage.

Have agreed to install equipment in a manner that is acceptable to local electrical inspection authorities.

Have agreed not to subcontract work related to this program.

Have agreed to provide 24-hour emergency service to service your generator transfer switch system.

Any contractor who meets the criteria and would like to become part of the provider network to install the generator safe connection systems, please call 800.55ASKUE (800.552.7583) to begin the review and approval process.

The provider network list will be continually updated as new providers are approved.

9.

Q.

Will AmerenUE guarantee the provider’s work?

A.

No. AmerenUE’s responsibility under this program is to determine that the contractor meets the applicable requirements at the time the contractor is put on the list to provide the rebates to the customer in accordance with the program. AmerenUE is not responsible for determining that any customer requirements are met by a contractor at any time; the decision to contract with a provider is made solely by the customer. AmerenUE does not have any responsibility to monitor the contractor’s performance or prices charged by the contractor. AmerenUE is also not liable for any of the contractor’s actions. And no contractor on the list may be considered an agent of AmerenUE. AmerenUE is not the manufacturer or seller of the generator transfer switches, and AmerenUE offers no warranty of any kind with respect to the sale, installation or performance of the same. AmerenUE is not responsible for determining the particular generator transfer switch for any customer.
