Pure Power - Green Tips

Save Energy and the Environment with Green Tips!

Use recycled and rechargeable batteries. Disposable batteries contain toxic chemicals, and manufacturing them takes about 50 times as much energy as the batteries produce.

Use cold water in your washer when possible. As much as 90 percent of the energy used to wash clothes goes to heating water.

Consider installing a clothesline in your backyard or basement to allow your clothes to dry naturally.

Clean your dryer’s lint trap. Your dryer will work more efficiently.

Use alternative building materials that don’t come from trees, such as recycled plastic lumber for rot-free decks, and cabinetry made from recycled newspapers.

Switch to a low-flow shower head to reduce the amount of hot water and energy used during showers.

Organize your refrigerator and freezer so that items can be found quickly. This will allow the door to be closed sooner!

Use a slow cooker to help prepare your meals. A slow cooker consumes far less energy than a conventional stove or oven.

Use a microwave oven for heating or cooking, and use the serving dish! A microwave oven uses half the power of a conventional oven, and cooking your food in the serving dish will give you one less dish to wash.

Use a dishwasher instead of doing the dishes by hand. A dishwasher uses less water and energy. However if you wash your dishes by hand, use a basin when rinsing. By dipping dishes in clean rinse water instead of turning on the facet for rinsing, you can save about $100 per year.

Keep your spa or hot tub covered with a tight-fitting insulated cover when it’s not in use. The cover will help prevent an excessive cool down of the water…saving you time and energy during re-heating.

Use a timer on your pool pump. Eight hours a day is more than sufficient for most filter systems.
